Are you one of those business owners who measures your success on social media by the number of followers you have?

If so, it’s time for you to face the facts… Follower count is simply a vanity metric to make us feel warm and fuzzy but has little impact on your account’s actual performance or your sales.

Having a boatload of followers serves no purpose if they aren’t interested in what you have to offer. Here’s four quick tips on how to attract people who actually care about your business and entice them to follow your socials.

1️⃣ Keep your profiles up-to-date.

Nothing is worse than visiting an outdated profile with an old picture (or NO picture at all), a lack of current information and no links to learn more about them. Ensure your profile is optimised and focused toward your ideal audience rather than on you or your business.

2️⃣  Leverage hashtags properly.

Hashtags allow people to search for content related to topics they are interested in. Using hashtags related to your products, services or industry will result in your content likely showing up for searches your target audience are making. Don’t use the same hashtags repeatedly, post after post, because after a while, they won’t work to your advantage. Mix them up and add new ones regularly!

3️⃣  Follow accounts relevant in your industry.

Make an effort to follow accounts related to your industry. Don’t just follow everyone, though. Make sure the accounts are people or businesses in your target audience. Also, look for competitor accounts with a similar target audience. It’s perfectly fine to follow their followers so you appear on their radar!

4️⃣ Purposefully engage with your audience.

The best way to be successful on social media is to be, you got it … social!  Social media is a great way to have a two-way conversation with your ideal customers. You’re literally in the palm of your audience’s hand, so use the advantage by taking the time to truly engage with them and provide value.

NOW is the time to stop looking at the number of followers you have as an indication of success. Stay focused on the quality of your followers and not just the quantity.
